Tonic Soup

I was at the supermarket after work when I came across the packets of soup ingredients and an idea struck me:

DC is a Cantonese and as you know, the Cantonese love soup drinking. It's been 2-3 months since he last had one. Thinking that he had to work overtime and would not be back so early today and since I knocked off early today, I have enough time to prepare the soup before he came home, so I bought a packet home to try.
Started at 7pm, the soup was only completed at 9pm. It was the longest time I ever took to prepare something edible! Luckily it was not a wasted effort, no major screwup during the preparation. :D

Tata! Presenting my American Ginseng Tonic Soup...

American Ginseng Tonic Soup is good for people with a stressful lifestyle and is suitable for all ages.
花旗参汤之功用:疏解压力,补气提神

Ingredients (Serves 3-4 persons)
300g to 500g of meat
1500ml of water (may add more water if desired)
One packet of soup ingredients which contains:
38g of Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati 玉竹
23g of Rhizoma Dioscoreae 山药
19g of Fructus Lycii 枸杞子
19g of Arillus Logan 龙眼肉
3g of Radix Panacis Quinquefolii 西洋参

Cooking method
1. Place soup ingredients and meat into a pot.
2. Add water and bring it to a boil.
3. Continue to simmer over low heat for 1.5 hours.
4. Add salt to taste.

I did not follow the above instructions closely.... opted not to put the meat and salt, but the taste is still great.

DC sure didn't expect it and couldn't believe it when he was back. At his first look into the pot, he thought it was a dessert, not tonic soup! Maybe the dried longan gave the wrong impression? The night could have ended perfect if not for this... what a joke! He drank it up anyway...
