A's first school outing

MiL sent this to both DC and us this morning. This photo was taken by A's school teacher during an outing to Chinatown on 26 Jan.

It was A's first outing with the school. He was especially happy when he came home that day! :)

捞啊!捞啊!

Today's 人日 and everyone in Singapore eats 鱼生 on this day.

Love this dish but unfortunately, I'm just out of confinement and still breastfeeding, so was unable to enjoy this with the rest as the dish contains raw fish.

A certainly loves the crackers and the tossing! He remembers it from last year! It's his 2nd time tossing this CNY and he shouted 捞啊!捞啊! with us and repeat some of the greetings with us... so cute!

CNY gathering cum house warming

My cousins just moved into their new place for 2 months. Just in time to organise a housewarming and CNY gathering! :)

The celebration was held at the function room which was just outside their unit.

A was running in and out of the function room, enjoying himself very much at the pool and with the kueh lapis (CNY goodies). DC had to watch over him. DC brought him to the pool and A got himself all wet while playing at the lap pool, we had to change him... It's been a long time since we last bring him to swim. Seems like he's beginning to enjoy water splashing? :)

Drinking Milk in tandem

This is how we manage the two at night...

This method is working very well for A, whom we struggled to coax him to drink every night. Now, he requests for his milk, hold his bottle and wants to drink with his 妹妹! :)

We've added a love potion in A's bottle too. It's breast milk. He seems to have enjoyed the antibodies packed milk much better! :)

CNY 2012

It's just nice that B n I were both out of our confinement and we could celebrate the CNY (B's first!) :)

As usual, we had busy schedule for day 1. We visited DC's parents, my uncle, his uncle, his aunt, his cousin and then we all gathered at his big aunt's place. In between, we went home for a rest.

Day 2 was much more relaxed. We just have to visit my parents and grandma.

A had great fun these 2 days. I believe he had a better understanding of CNY and definitely enjoys the goodies (esp the bah gwa) more than us!

What I like about Chinese New Year

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

A is 30 months old

He refused to wear his pajamas and school uniform starting from 27 Dec. Instead, he wants to choose his own clothes. This carries on until today!

He understands a lot of things now and speaks more sentences although still two-worded e.g. Papa there, mum mum (food) there, Papa mum mum (eat), "mei mei oi oi" (sister sleeping). He is also more willing to speak new words upon request. I hear new words like "Milk milk", "拿拿“, "Happy", "伯伯", “park", "dog", "wow wow" (the sound of dog bark) and the latest "姨婆" (today!). His "A" and "B" are now perfect and I hear he tells the taxi driver he wants to go "Shunfu" whenever he sits in the taxi with his grandpa! Wow! :)

This month, his younger sister is born. I'm glad there weren't too much jealousy from him. DC has done a very good job bonding with him when I was in the hospital. He celebrated his sister full month celebration and I'm surprised that now, he actually understands and recognizes his sister from the person or photo! I love it when he says "妹妹". :) Having said that, my only problem is that I don't know who to carry when both A and his sister calls or cries for me!

He is very active now that he's so super mobile, climbing up and down and running here and there! With his new sister, I couldn't really catch up with him! This CNY was good for him to expel his never-ending energy and let him know his relatives and gor gors... What of Chinese New Year does he like? It must be the ba kwa and the tossing of the yusheng! :) I taught him Gong Xi Gong Xi too. I love it when he did the action! :)

Much needed body massage

Unlike last time, I started the body massage session much earlier, at week 4. The last time was month 3. I started the first session on 18 Jan.

It was initially a 7 days course. I shortened to 5 days because of CNY as I didn't want any break in between. Then, on day 4, the massage lady texted me to inform me that her aunt passed away and she had to attend her funeral. So, it became 4 days massage package of $68 per session.

This lady was recommended by a shop assistant and I would say that her massage skill is good. There was not much pain and she knows exactly which part of my body is aching just by massaging! That amazed me as she was quite spot-on! I had started feeding B these few days (confinement lady has left) and those very spots that she pointed were places where I developed pains due to the feeding position.

On top of massaging, she was also not selfish to "impart" some of her skills to me. She taught me how to massage my arms, neck and stomach and how to massage B so that she's not so colicky. She also told me that I had no water retention which I was happy to hear that. :)

However, her binding skills weren't so good. Not quite what I was looking for! She told me that I was the first one who did a C-sect and showed effect on the second day of massage! That speaks of how good her binding was! Her binding cloth was long and she had to fold it over my hip to make it shorter. That made me very uncomfortable as the folded edge cuts into my hips! While others provided the binder at the end of the session, she took back and reuse the binder on others!

I also don't like the oily feeling after massage... I don't know why it doesn't really work on me (I wonder why?), it only at most relieve some of the stress from my body.

B is 1 month old

She had her full month celebration a week ago and was all alert on that day, unlike most newborns!

We discovered in this week that B has a strong neck and could hold her head up for a split second when held in vertical position over the shoulders! Maybe because she keeps leaning backwards, the back could have given her the strength to 'force' her head up for a brief moment?

She is very responsive to sounds as seen in her startle reactions. Also, whenever the confinement lady calls her, she'll turn to the correct direction in response! :)

She's drinking about 75-90ml of milk for each feed (75ml of fm and 90ml of ebm) and is very prompt in crying for milk. She's also impatient to wait and could cry her lungs out when she didn't have her milk fast enough. *sweat*

Mummy has taken over the care of Baby B after the confinement lady has left. The confinement lady often complains that B stays awake at night and cries for people to carry and the auntie had to carry her until she sleeps for 1.5-2 hours every night. B also poos in the night. One night has passed... so far so good, no poos, no cries (except for milk) and sleeps after feeding! :)

It's a scam!

My confinement lady had just left (one day early) to catch her bus to Malacca for Chinese New Year...

I'm for engaging a confinement lady. She has been a great help taking care of baby n my meals. In fact, this confinement lady was a much better n faster cook than the previous. However, there are some things I'm displeased and disappointed about:

1. Punctuality
She was very late on her first day and arrived after 3pm! A few days before, the lady smsed that she'll let me know the time n that was what I last heard from her! I was very worried that there will be a no-show and texted her the night n the whole morning but there were no reply!

2. Afternoon Nap
She did not even inform me and went straight to take her naps in the afternoon. I did not raise my displeasure on this to her but feel that she should communicate this requirement to me.

3. Phone Calls
I should have requested for her to turn on the phone only at night. She seems to be always on her handphone! It rang a number of times when she was feeding the baby but luckily, she chose not to pick up the calls until feeding is over.

4. Bad example for my maid
She interacted a lot to my maid and they shared the load for the housework. While I like that she taught my maid to hang the clothes out to dry and train her in cooking, I dislike her asking for time off for shopping and bringing my maid along with her and giving nail polish to my maid to apply on her toes! She even requested to go back to celebrate CNY claiming that she couldn't get any coach tickets back home...

5. Honesty
I was totally shocked when she told me that she was not 花姐, the confinement lady that I'd engaged! What? Then who is she? I later found out that she was called 秀梅 and was asked to work from a friend. It turned out that this 花姐 asked around for people to replace her and earned a commission of 10% from this! What a conspiracy! I hated the fact that this 花姐 was irresponsible and didn't even had the integrity to inform me about the replacement. I think she does not deserve the commission at all! She was MIA and refused to reply my message when I texted her! I also dislike that auntie 秀梅 lied about her identity. I called her 花姐 the first day she came to work and she only revealed her real identity a week after! Why couldn't she call me to inform me that she was the one coming to my place to work?

Lesson learnt: Do not rely on referral from other confinement lady, there may be commission involved! 花姐 was referred to me by another confinement lady and I was desperate to find someone who could work during the CNY. In future, if I had another baby, I might consider agency or through word of mouth of people I trust! Definitely not through other confinement ladies!

B's 1st month celebration

The celebration went on rather smoothly without much hiccups, thank God! :) My parents and sis helped to collect the cakes, no punctured tyre this year, hehe. :P

In the morning, we decorated the house with balloons and banner and had the ceremonial hair cutting for B by Daddy.
20120115-03-EPL1

Unlike all other newborns that we visited on their full month celebration, she was wide awake, alert and active throughout the day. I was surprised as she usually sleeps through the day! She must have known it's her big day! :P

Besides the buffet line, we also got our confinement lady to cook up a pot of yummy vinegar pig trotters with 18 eggs and it was very well received! :)

Our photo of the family of four, the second one since the one taken in the hospital:

Many relatives were there. We were thankful for the generous gifts! There were cash gifts for us, baby shower gifts for B, birthday gift n wishes for me (it was my birthday the day before), DOMs n chicken essences for me. Even A has gifts too - from NT5 (song book), DC's cousin (socks) and Ah Boy (his favorite cars and garage set)! We were so blessed!

A Closed Door Birthday

As I'm not supposed to step out of home during my confinement period, this year's birthday celebration is naturally held at home.

I invited my family over for dinner for KFC and pizzas.

I had my confinement food. On top of that, Mummy specially prepared 米酒鸡 (confinement food) for me. It was yummy, but too much!

My sisters gave me a clarins set and I got an ang bao from mummy. DC bought a small cake and a LoVely gift for me. LoVe them all!

And, as usual, A is very eager to help me blow the candle, cut the cake and open up the presents. :)

DIY Baby Shower Banner

I thought it'll be nice to have a banner for the full month celebration this Sunday. Since I couldn't go out to buy (I'm still doing my confinement now) and there wasn't enough time to purchase online, I decided to make it myself. :)

I used similar colors as the cards we would be giving out together with the gift boxes. The steps are simple... just design, print them on papers, cut out, string them up and hang the banner.

Here's a peek at my one-hour work:

The usual ones out there have wordings like "Baby Shower" or "It's a Girl"... I decided to customise one with just B's name on the banner. :)

B is 3 weeks old

She's getting chubbier on the cheeks! :) We took her to another pediatrician (A's usual pediatrician) and indeed, she's put on good weight!

We've taken her swaddle wrap away and allow her to sleep without the wrap. She's little but has huge strength. She resisted whenever I hold her tiny hands (to put her fallen mittens in) and kicked off her blanket.

She's still sleeping more in the day and lesser at night, asking for milk more and more frequent every 1-2 hours (drinking about 75ml per ebm and 60ml per fm each feed)! We tried to turn her on her stomach one day (5 Jan) to rid off the wind and she hates that position, crying non-stop and struggling! Reminds me of her brother then!

We are now preparing for her celebration next week. I hope she can turn her clock around soon (probably on that celebration day?) so that I could have good sleep when I take over! :P

It's my lunar birthday today and I forgot all about it!

My mummy gave me a call early this morning and came by at 10am to send me these:

It's my lunar birthday today! :)

Mum's the best, she always remembers our alternate birthdays and prepares red eggs for us! I can't remember from when onwards, she starts adding chicken drumsticks (which is DC's family tradition) to the list of must-eat during lunar birthdays...

I ate one of the red eggs and the drumsticks for lunch and DC ate up the other egg during dinner. Luckily I was at my second half stage of confinement, otherwise, I wasn't even allowed to eat the eggs and chicken!

For supper, the confinement lady also made chicken herbal soup with a chicken drumstick for me! Nice!

Fever that comes and goes

A had a sudden fever yesterday evening that reached 38.3ºC. We wonder what caused the fever? Caught a cold during shopping with Daddy and grandparents? or having a growth spurt? or the temperature of the room where he took the nap was too cold?

Thank God, after giving medicine and applying the patch, as sudden as it comes, his fever vanished this morning! And, he's all well to go to school today! :) If not, we would have to bring him and his baby sister to the pediatrician for checkup together and I wonder if we could manage that? :P

Watching period dramas now

I'm so in love with these period dramas! They got me all hooked...

1. 树大根深/ Deep Rooted Tree (Korean)

Episodes: 24
Genre: Period
Casts: Jang Hyuk as Kang Chae Yoon, Han Suk Kyu as King Sejong, Shin Se Kyung as So Yi
Synopsis: Based on Lee Jeong-myeong’s novel “Deep-rooted Tree”. Work that highlights the serial killings during the 7 days before the announcement of the Korean script.
A series of murder occurred during the reign of King Sejong. As Kang Chae Yoon who is investigating these cases gets closer to the root of the truth, he finds himself embroiled in a massive conspiracy behind the serial killings which involves a group of genius who are willing to risked their lives towards their cause/goals and secret powers who will interfere with the course of his investigations.
Review: This is a nice one! I completed this drama on 6 Jan 2011. This is about the birth of the korean words, killing, revenge and political fights. Every episode is exciting and I had a better understanding of the korean words structure after this show.

2. 步步惊心/ Startling by Each Step (Chinese)

Episodes: 35
Genre: Period
Casts: Cecilia Liu, Nicky Wu, Kevin Cheng
Synopsis: A non-descript white collar worker from the 21st century who under an out-of-body experience, travels back in time after encountering a near-fatal accident. She was stranded in the 18th century Qing Dynasty for nearly 15 years in the body of her previous incarnation.
Review: This is showing or going to be shown on tv channel 8. I heard good reviews about it on tv and so decided to watch it. Interesting, it makes me want to read and find out more about the history of Emperors Kangxi and Yongzhen (and his siblings)! The last time I did that was for a HK drama series starred by Louis Khoo and I became very interested in Terracotta Warriors and Horses, Qin Shi Huang Emperor and his era!

3. 萬凰之王/ Curse of the Royal Harem (Cantonese)

Episodes: 31
Genre: Period
Casts: Jessica Hsuan, Myolie Wu, Sunny Chan, Gigi Wong, Nancy Wu, Joel Chan
Synopsis: Set in the mid-1800s Qing Dynasty, Curse of the Royal Harem is loosely based on the reign of the Daoguang Emperor of China and tells of the drama and romantic intrigue in the court's Manchurian royal harem.
Consort Quan (Jessica Hsuan) was Emperor Daoguang (Sunny Chan) elder brother's new wife. However, Daoguang's brother was missing after a battle and his body was never found. Empress Dowager Congci (Gigi Wong) devastated that she lost her beloved son. She saw Quan as an ominous woman and wanted her dead. Daoguang was already in love with Quan since he was young. One day, he announced Quan as his new concubine, which angered Empress Shencheng (Myolie Wu). Partnering up with Empress Dowager, the two vowed to eradicate Quan using many different schemes to harm her. As Quan wanted to protect herself, she did not hesitate to battle the Empress to the end. During their battle, Quan accidentally discovered a major plot happening in the royal harem. Who is behind this big plot? Who will be the winner in this intense battle in the royal harem?
Review: Now watching. I've always love HK's historical series. This can't be too bad since this was one of the three esp made in celebration of TVB's 44th anniversary! :) I just started watching the first episode today. Maybe it's based on the same dynasty as 步步惊心, I can't help but to compare both. The focus is different: China's 步步惊心 is on brotherly fight for power for the chair while HK's 萬凰之王 is on the concubines' competition for the emperor's love. 萬凰之王setting is very grand (and golden) and the empress and concubines clothes were very colorful compared to 步步惊心. I caught my eyes on the rings that the royalties wear... I may want to look out for such rings to wear! :P

Stitches Removed

I went to remove the stitches today at the gynae's after we sent A to his grandparent's in the morning. Then, we went to collect B's metabolism and blood test reports at the Pediatrician before we arrived at the gynae's.

My gynae tried to make it easy and joked around as though he was peeling the plasters and then he pulled the stitches along with the plasters. It was a fast one. Actually, I did feel him pulling the thread and did suspect that he was pulling the plasters off. Thank God, there was no pain and no panic like last time!

He told me he used dissolvable threads for the inside and the non-dissolvable ones for the outside. There were some bruises on the wound though. He sprayed a plastic over it and instructed me to apply the anti-scar cream over it starting Mon...

I weighed myself today at the clinic. Strangely, the hospital did not take my weight when I checked in but based on the last visit to the gynae (which was about one week before the checkin), I had only lost 6kg of weight during the delivery and left with about 7kg to lose! Doc says that my stomach muscles are weak and there are quite a bit of reserved fats around my tummy! :(

Anyways, we took a photo with Doc before we left, didn't have the chance to do in the hospital. :)

Next visit would be one month later. Meanwhile, I had to continue with the fish oil and vitamins.

After the visit, DC drove me to Marina Square where I shopped for quite a while for my CNY clothes! :P (Ought not be doing this during my confinement but it's CNY when I'm out of confinement!) I managed to choose 2 floral/graphic nursing dresses, 2 nursing tops and 1 ponchos. DC got himself some socks too. :)

B is 2 weeks old

Here's my little princess at Week 2:

Her umbilical cord dropped on the 12th day quite nicely. Thank God it's not like her brother's!

There is a lot of peeling at the start of the week but not so much of peeling on her skin now. :)

We still feed her every 3 hourly (bf, ebm in the morning and fm at night) but she would cry for her milk as early as after 1 hour (if she's awake even though she's not hungry)!

She wakes up and stays alert more often now. That means she opens her eyes more... she is single-eyelid like mummy! :) Her eyebrows are more obvious now and her eyelashes are showing up...

She starts to smile more this week too. Nope, no dimple spotted!

The headache part is that since this week, she stays awake during the late night after her second night feed, according to the confinement lady!

The start of the terrible two?

It all started on 26 Dec 2011 night where we first felt the brunt of terrible two... Before that, all was still manageable!

He refused to put on his pajamas and kept wanting to choose his own clothes. He chose an orange Polo Tee and a pair of shorts to wear to bed.

The next day, he refused to change into his school uniform. We gave in and let him wear his Polo to school. At night, we were able to let him wear his PJ.

On the third day morning, the same thing happened! He wore his blue Polo T-shirt to school.

On the fourth day, he chose his own bib. At night, he chose his daddy's clothes! Haha...

On the fifth day, he refused to wear his school shoes and wanted to choose his own! We managed to force the shoes in and he cried and cried and cried for his shoes and for mummy. Daddy managed to calm him down by bringing him downstairs to post a letter.

Today, the start of a new year, a new school term, he did it again and this time, we couldn't bother so much and just let him be, as long as he's happy... guess it all part of growing up.

In fact, this reminds me of myself! I did the same thing: Refused to wear the school uniform and wanted my grandma to put on my favorite dress to school. I was 5 then and my mum was in the hospital with my newborn brother! Haha...

New Beginning

It's the start of a new year, new work week and school term! It seems that everybody in fb is busy with sending their kiddos to school today...

DC is back to work today after clearing his paternal and annual leave,
A is back to school after the public holiday,
and I'm taking a long break taking care of Baby B! Wahaha...

I actually have some time in the afternoon and I'm thinking of making use of this precious time (while I still have help from confinement lady) to do something useful for my A and B or crafty to satisfy myself. Already have some plans in my mind, hope I can complete these little projects!

Happy New Year, everyone! :)
