We received an ang bao from an auntie on baby's full month celebration. On it was these words:
祝侄儿夫妇弄璋之喜!
Wa, chim ah! The first thing we do is to check on what's "弄璋之喜". I thought it means "Happy Full month" but I was wrong. :P It actually means "Congratulations on the birth of a boy". It also harks back to the old traditional times where boys are favoured over girls.
璋 - Refers to precious jade.
弄瓦之喜 - Used for birth of girls. 瓦 - Ceramic, obviously less precious than jade.
Learnt something today, maybe I'll use it for my cousin's first month ang bao next year (provided he delivered a boy), ha! :)
